Generic Ethernet Access (GEA or FTTCoE)

Generic Ethernet Access (GEA) is also known as Ethernet over Fibre (FTTCoE). It is an ideal entry level leased line product that delivers the same benefits of a full fibre leased line without the high monthly costs. If fibre broadband is available to you, then you should be able to get GEA. Install times are very fast due to it using existing copper/fibre infrastructure.

Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM)

Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) is the saviour for those who can only get standard copper broadband or for those with slow fibre broadband speeds. It uses existing copper infrastructure so there’s no need for civils works either. Therefore installation times are fast and you still get a guaranteed, dedicated bandwidth, even if it is slower than the fibre Ethernet leased line option.

LEASED LINE WARNINGS

Over the years we’ve heard some comments by leased line providers that have been very misleading. These have either come from our clients or directly from the research we perform in the market each quarter. Be careful of people telling you what you want to hear. Hopefully these points will help your conversations.

%22We can get that installed for you in a matter of days.%22

Even if a building is classed as ‘on-net’ a survey is always required. The result of the survey will inform us of how long the installation will take. We have installed circuits in as little as a couple of weeks, but this may take longer. If you specified how long your installation will take before a survey, this should raise concerns.

“Everyone uses our infrastructure, you might as well buy directly from us.”

Most ISPs rely on the infrastructure provided by BT Openreach or Virgin to deliver their services. By going directly to them it doesn’t mean you are preventing an ‘extra layer.’ BT and Virgin have a part of their business that sells direct to businesses, but the direct team will still need to go through the same hoops as everyone else. You could argue that their ISPs are more valuable to them than the part of their company who sells direct to the public. Pricing, service levels, technical knowledge and a whole lot more will differ.

%22Leased lines are all the same, just go for the cheapest.%22

Cheap does not equal quality. The confusing element for most companies looking for a leased line is the sheer volume of different information, such as monthly pricing. It’s easy to just go for the cheapest, but the success of your business is dependant on your internet being correctly configured, reliable, fast, secure, monitored, managed, supported, flexible and scalable. We review our prices once a quarter against 15 different leased line providers and price ours accordingly. We then add our exceptional services on top to make sure you get the full package.

%22We can go directly to senior management, jumping the queue.%22

We’ve heard people stating that issues will get dealt with immediately, and if they’re not, a personal relationship with senior management at Openreach will ensure that it does. This industry is so heavily regulated, that favouring one ISP over another isn’t permitted. Jumping to the top of a queue at the detriment of another company is a serious breach. Every ISP has processes and escalation paths to follow.

%22We are the best and we can do everything you want.%22

The majority of people who work in the sales departments of telecoms companies get commission on each sale. You might be promised everything you want and told everything you want to hear, but once you sign, the issues suddenly mount up. By this point it’s moved from sales to the technical team, who are left picking up the pieces or scratching their heads. By then it’s too late.

A Technical Manager is involved in every quotation. The same person will be responsible for delivering and supporting your service. As a client, you also get their direct contact details in case you need to speak to them directly.
